This garden was the vision of Sustrans Officer Jon Moody who worked with us and the children of Ancaster Primary School to create a station garden. The children each designed a garden and the best one was voted for, which took the shape of a train. The garden was made up of three different zones; one following the traditional formal planting process, the second an informal “forages garden” which consisted of fruit trees, edible flowers and herbs; which the public were encouraged to harvest. The final zone consisted of a meadow garden, filled with wild flowers to great a habitat for bees and butterflies with bee and bird boxes. There was also a rain harvesting system installed off the bike rack to assist the gardens sustainability.

The site of the garden had previously been a garden area tended to by a member of the community known affectionately as “Railway John”. In his honour the garden at Ancaster was named “Railway Johns Garden” and a plaque bearing the name was installed.
The children of Ancaster primary adopted the station and they were placed in the Silver band of “Its your Station” category of the Community Rail Awards.
